Well, the rate of progression is different for each person, and I can’t predict exactly what will happen for you. But it is likely that the symptoms you are currently experiencing, such as your memory troubles and loss of interest in mahjong, will get worse over time. We will work to develop strategies with you to maintain function for as long as possible.

It is the cognitive problems that progress initially. It is not until dementia is quite advanced that people start to develop physical problems. It is important to remember though, that while you will lose some abilities as the condition progresses, there will always be some that remain, and we will focus on maintaining those strengths.

Unfortunately there is currently no cure. There are treatments that can help with some of the symptoms, but not all people respond to this treatment. The result for most people is modest and temporary.

The most common drugs for treating mild Alzheimer’s Disease are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. These drugs block the enzyme that breaks down an important memory chemical. About two thirds of patients experience some improvement in memory while taking these drugs. But they can cause some side-effects.

Yes! Research tells us that that individualised exercise programs can lead to improvements in cognition and how you function in everyday life. There are also other alternatives that may be beneficial, such as cognitive training and rehabilitation, but there isn’t as much research for these. They can help increase confidence and trust in yourself.

There are a number of things we recommend the keep the brain healthy and active, such as eating well, getting plenty of rest, and staying active. Practical tips include: taking your time with tasks, using a notepad and/or carrying a calendar, organising your belongings and finding a special place for essential items. People sometimes call this their “memory centre”.

I’m sorry Dr Zheng, but yes, when Alzheimer’s disease becomes very advanced, it does result in death. As you seem healthy otherwise I think you will survive for some years and we thus need to plan ahead well.

That is always a very difficult question to answer. What I can tell you is that even though the rate of progression of Alzheimer's disease is variable, the average life expectancy after onset is 12-15 years.
